Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I'm confused about making a choice between a Maruti Swift VXi and a Hyundai Santro Xing ERLX. My budget is around Rs 4, 50,000 and I want performance and mileage. My first choice is the Swift but I like the Santro as well. Please advise.

S Tyagi

The Swift is clearly the better car than the Santro as it is a class bigger with more space and better performance. But fuel efficiency isn't as good as the Hyundai offering and the car is not as cheap to buy and run either.

We have a petrol-engined and thirsty Daewoo Cielo. Should we go ahead and fit it with a CNG kit?

Pradnesh N

Yes, the Daewoo Cielo lends itself well to CNG conversion as it has a big boot to accommodate the gas cylinder and sufficient power to compensate for the performance drop. Also, old Cielos are only worth running on CNG as they are heavy on petrol and the resale value is so poor that it doesn't make sense selling them for a pittance. CNG conversion can give your Cielo a new lease of life, but make sure you carry out the conversion at a reliable and reputed workshop and use well known brands of CNG kits like Landi-Renso, Bedini, OMVL, Tartarini, BRC and Lovato.

I plan to buy a Maruti but am unsure if I should choose the 800 or the Alto. I'm a doctor and we are a family of four from Chennai. This will be a family car to take my wife and kids out. I wouldn't be using it to go to work.

Ganesh K

Between the Alto and the 800, go for the Alto. It's a better car in every respect and the only reason to buy the 800 is if you can't afford another car. In terms of safety, comfort and performance, the Alto is much better.
