Platform for success

On 6 March this year at the Geneva Auto Show (4-18 March 2007), Tata Motors unveiled the Tata Elegante, a sedan concept based on an all-new platform being developed as a successor to the current Indica/ Indigo one. Though the Elegante is largely a concept, we expect the production car to borrow its dimensions and quite a few styling details.

The Tata Elegante, larger than the current Indigo sedan, was conceptualised to incorporate 4-cylinder transverse petrol and diesel engines that will displace 1.4 to 2 litres as also a compact V6 petrol power unit. The diesel powerplants being developed will be common rail direct injection turbo units and will comply with the forthcoming Euro V emissions norms.

These engines, petrol and diesel, will give the car buyer a choice in performance - power will vary from 89 to 199 bhp with torque of up to 280 Nm. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

The Tata Elegante also flaunts a satellite navigation system, cruise control, integrated Bluetooth compatibility, heated mirrors, rain sensors for the wipers and front and rear parking sensors, to name a few.

Besides the above, Tata also displayed a redesigned Tata Pick Up, latest versions of the Tata Indica hatchback, the Indigo SW station wagon and the Tata Safari DiCOR SUV.
