On a happy note

"Anandam" has caught viewers' attention

Another Tamil mega serial that has caught the attention of viewers is "Anandam" (Sun TV, 7 p.m., Monday to Friday), slotted at number two with an average TRP of 21.36.

Though the serial initially evoked lukewarm response, it soon gained popularity. Directed by R. Selvaraj, "Anandam" does not boast many big names (except Sukanya and Delhi Kumar) in its cast.

According to T. G. Thyagarajan (Sathya Jyothi Films), the producer, "Though the serial is not telecast on prime time, it is still a hit thanks to team work. The production team is constantly working on audience feedback. We bring in changes accordingly." Thyagarajan's team has ensured that there is not too much melodrama in the serial that portrays women as smart, suave, ambitious and independent.

When the serial began, popular TV writer Devibala rated high the character of Shanti (played by Sukanya), a war widow who re-marries Karthik, an Army man. Karthik's family — father (Delhi Kumar), mother, a married elder brother and two sisters — is shocked and not willing to accept Shanti, especially Karthik's sister-in law, Abhirami (played brilliantly by Brinda Das), who wants him to marry her sister.

Initially, the focus was on Shanti and how she brings about a change in the attitude of the family members, except Abhirami, who is constantly plotting against her. But, of late, the spotlight has been turned on the wily Abhirami.Says `Vision Time' Ramamurthy, who is marketing "Anandam": "The serial has made the 7 p.m. slot popular and created a new prime time band. What has worked in favour of the serial is that it offers something different."

Recently, actor Sripriya was introduced in the serial as an NRI businesswoman, Charulatha, with enough hints thrown in the script that she may be the long lost mother of Abhirami. Says Thyagarajan: "The most difficult thing is to keep the audience interest alive, week after week."
