A collection of 40 paintings and sculptures by 40 leading artists will come under the gavel at the Ballroom at Taj Coromandel on March 24 as part of Confluence 2007.
The art auction, hosted by the Rotary Club of Madras and the Association of British Scholars, will feature the work of Jogen Chowdhury, Paritosh Sen, Amitabh Sengupta, Dhiraj Chaudhari, and of artists of the Madras Movement such as Adimoolam, R. B. Bhaskaran, and S. G. Vasudev.
Ten of the forty artists whose work is on display are from the Cholamandalam Artist's Village.
Bishwajit Banerjee, director of Artworld gallery, believes this major auction will serve to highlight the contribution of the Madras Movement to the development of art in the country.
"This significant movement has been largely ignored by art historians," he said, "but we believe that collectors will line up to own the works of stalwarts spearheading the Madras Movement."
The art auction will begin at 6.30 p.m. A preview of the paintings for the general public will be held at Clive Hall, Taj Coromandel between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the same day. Those interested in bidding can register for the auction during the preview.
Confluence 2007 will be conducted by Angira Arya, and part of the proceedings will be given to charity.
