Ashish Pandey and Niki Mahajan unveil their "serious" collections for WLIFW

COLLAGE A Niki Mahajan outfit
"Everyday, I woke up and thought the idea is not working. Hundreds of sketches and ten months of hard work finally gave me `tears in heaven', my autumn winter collection," Ashish Pandey says as he and Niki Mahajan unveil their respective collections for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW). A serious collection, as Pandey puts it, it is a concoction of the highs and lows of the innocent minds who have lost their father in wars, terrorist operations or any other form of violence. It was tough to create the imagination and ideas in clothes. The feminine silhouette is inspired from the kid's wardrobe. Mood oscillates like that of a child - happy and playful at times, pensive and shy the next moment. Colour palette comprises shades of old rose, forest green, grey, and brown. Dupion, taffeta, organza with georgette have been used with soft embroideries and thematic detailing.
Collage unleashed
Niki Mahajan's collection `collage unleashed' is the celebration of Indian silhouette. Her designs are the ideas on canvas personified. The collection is all silk, matkas and tussars. "Only silk can absorb colours. Thus I have used a lot of it with a hint of velvet and net," Mahajan clarifies. Hand painting on each ensemble is done with the fine detailing. Niki dislikes the word western in fashion. "My collection has no western elements. However, dash of Persian and Afghan elements in hemlines and sleeves, which can be related to Indian couture are used." Semi-precious stones with swarovski and buttons are used but the collection is more or less masculine. "I never wanted to do girlie work. It had to be strong." Shade card remains dark brown and blues keeping the line in mind but she has used vibrant colours to make outfits peppy.
