Fact from fiction

UNCOVERED Freemasons on Trial examines the group

Long shrouded in secrecy, the Freemasons have shot back into public attention thanks largely to the "The Da Vinci Code". Now, the National Geographic Channel addresses that curiosity with a programme called "Freemasons on Trial", which examines an organisation shrouded in mystery with secret handshakes, rituals and regulations and suggested links to everything from the death of Pope John Paul I to the Jack the Ripper murders.

Premiering at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 25 on the National Geographic Channel, Freemasons on Trial takes audiences for the first time into Masonic temples around the world, providing exclusive never-before-seen footage. One Freemason lodge in Halifax, Canada even allows cameras to film a sacred Masonic ritual, which has taken place in Masonic temples since the early 1700s. This footage is supplemented by interviews with prominent Freemasons across North America and Great Britain, as well as non-Freemason authors and Freemason experts.

The two-hour programme provides critical insight into the meaning behind some of the most common Freemason symbols and possible Freemason codes found in surprising places such as a medieval Scottish church and even on the American one-dollar bill. While rumours abound about Freemasonry, "Freemasons on Trial" aims to discern the fact from fiction behind this enigmatic group.
