Call centre

SUNDER RAMACHANDRANKISHORE T

Call centre interviews

I have completed my graduation in 2006 and have appeared for some call centre interviews.

I had gone through three rounds in one company before been rejected and the same happened with other two companies. I feel I was rejected because of my accent as I otherwise speak good English. Please advice?

Kishore T

Did you ask for specific feedback from any of these companies that you have mentioned? This would have helped you analyse your opportunity areas in communication and work on towards improving them.

A neutral accent is important, as you would be interacting with a global customer base. A heavy regional accent may hinder comprehension. You can consider joining a domestic BPO and spend some time to improve your skills.

Once you feel confident, you can consider applying to international BPOs.

Shifting to BPOs

I completed my BE in computer science in 2004 and joined a government job, which was contractual in nature.

My contract is expiring and I would like to now shift to call centres. How can I make this shift?

Rajshekar

BPOs are open to hiring people from all backgrounds as long as they have excellent communication and customer service skills and willingness to work in a 24/7 environment.

You may have to start at the entry level as you are shifting industries. So, start giving interviews at BPO companies. Your background in the government sector would not be a hindrance in entering the BPO sector.

Improving English

I completed my BCA from Osmania University in 2006 and I am working as a hardware engineer. My English is not good and I would like to improve my spoken and written English so that I can join a BPO in a technical role. How can I do the same?

Madhusree Rao

You should join a good coaching institute in your area so that you can work in a collaborative environment with other learners. You should also start reading English books and watching English movies and shows. Developing fluency in a language would require discipline and focused effort.

Try to communicate in English as much as possible and don't be disheartened if you make mistakes or if people criticise you. You would be able to master the language with time. BPOs do hire BCA graduates for Technical Support associates. All the best!
