TRAVEL NOW Grab the best deals to exotic destinations
When once holidays meant a trip to grandma's, travellers now have a range of destinations to choose from, be it in the country or abroad. But with differing aspirations for holidays, planning a trip can be both trying and expensive, as some operators allegedly hike prices to take advantage of holidaymakers. Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Maldives, Hong Kong or Europe... there are choices galore for those eager to go abroad. And one need not save up for it for the rest of one's life.
The `Travel now, pay later' schemes are a boon to travellers. With tie-ups between banks, airlines and tour companies, travellers can pay up in monthly instalments.
According to travel agents, South Asian countries are a hot tourist destination. "When it comes to budget travel, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore are popular destinations. Although Sri Lanka is closer and cheaper, people prefer heading to Malaysia and Singapore as they have that `foreign' feel with its skyscrapers, malls, cleanliness and facilities. It is also considered a shopper's paradise. Thailand too is popular as the exchange rate is almost the same as India's," says Benny Thomas of Holiday Shop.
However as a "been there, done that" lifestyle is gradually emerging, leisure travellers prefer to visit a place they have never been before. "Travel programmes are bringing the urge in people to discover new places. Europe is a popular destination," says Monisha Lewis John, assistant manager, business development, Great India Tour Company.
`Desi' tour
Those who prefer `desi' tours too have never had it so good. With a slash on cost of railway tickets and rising emergence of low-cost carriers, travel enthusiasts find they can discover new places in the country without burning a hole in their pocket.
"First-time travellers by flight prefer the `no-frills airlines' as the low travel fares leave extra cash to splurge on accommodations and services," says Leena Suresh, staff member, Panikker Travels.
For South Indians, says Leena, Himachal Pradesh holds charm. Goa too is a hot favourite.
According to Praveen Muralee, proprietor of Eco Ventures, people are also opting for holidays that offer a touch of adventure. Eco Ventures offers tour packages to wildlife sanctuaries across the country.
Wildlife package
For instance, the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary package has a trip to the sanctuary, a visit to the tribal villages in the vicinity and a taste of their lifestyle. "Tourists can see them catch fish and watch as they cook the fresh catch for them," says Praveen.
Cruising is a new trend with tourists heading to Mumbai for the experience. "Many opt for the Star Cruises to Goa and Lakshadweep. Some club the Star Cruise Virgo trip while on their visit to Singapore," says Monisha.
It may be necessary though to book your dream break several months in advance and be flexible with the destination, travel dates and accommodation. It may also help you find reasonable summer packages.
So, with holidays catering to every whim, fancy and pocket, what are you waiting for? There is a whole world to discover.
