Fitness trainers set great store by Central YMCA Qualifications (CYQ) courses. Anyone who has passed a CYQ can stake a claim to a membership in the International Register of Exercise Professionals (IREP). The IREP is an elite club, whose members are called "full fitness professionals". Not just fitness professionals, anyone can take a shot at CYQ.

But acquiring a CYQ certificate is a long drawn process and calls for utmost commitment. An aspirant has to clear three levels. Broadly, the programme includes exercising to music, circuit training, aqua, step, group indoor cycling, lifestyle and client appraisal, training in different environments, nutrition and weight management, exercise referral, ante and post natal exercise, working with older adults and special populations and training and development in the active leisure sector.

This complex set of tasks can be taught only by someone who is already qualified in CYQ or by an institute with CYQ accreditation. Amanda Brewer, Director of Education at Impact British Training Solutions (BTS), has the knowledge and experience to train fitness professionals in CYQ modules. For over a decade, she has been creating "full fitness professionals" in Britain. She has been doing the same thing in the Middle East since 2004, when her husband Peter Brewer landed a job as leadership and management trainer with the police department in Abu Dhabi. She and her team from BTS were in Chennai recently to conduct a CYQ course at FitnessOne. Vivekanand, managing director, FitnessOne, invited Amanda to conduct her courses here when the two met a while ago at the Sportex exhibition in Dubai.

Amanda is a fitness freak from the cradle. Her father Harry Thomas used to work out with Arnold Schwarzenegger and her mother also put fitness as among the most important things in life. By age 20, she was a full-fledged fitness trainer. Amanda has managed to inculcate the same values in her daughters. One of them, Jade Brewer is already teaching with mom at Impact, Abu Dhabi. And the other, Lynsey Brewer, is joining the team shortly.
