Vedanthangal bird sanctuary
The first place that comes to mind when you mention bird sanctuary is Vedanthangal.
Naturally, as this sanctuary is a haven for bird watchers, with 115 species of birds being recorded.
The oldest water bird sanctuary in the country, Vedanthangal is spread over 30 hectares. It is located in Kanchipuram district, 86 km from Chennai.
A grove of Barringtonia acacia nilotica trees in a tank forms part of the sanctuary.
Migratory birds: Teals, shovellers, pintails and sandpipers.
Breeding birds: Cormorants, egrets, grey herons, open-billed storks, darters, spoonbills, white ibises, night herons, grey pelicans and painted storks.
Resident birds: Coots, terns and moorhens.
Best season to visit
Between November and February. The nesting season commences late October, and the birds are through with breeding and return to their feeding grounds by about February.

How to get there
By Air: Chennai - 58 km away
By Rail: Chengalpattu - 30 km away
By Road: Regular buses from Chennai, Tambaram and Chengalpattu.
The sanctuary is open between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. A guide will accompany visitors, if requested. The entry fee is Rs. 5 for adults and Rs. 2 for children.
