Simran is all set for a strong come back

After a three-year break, Simran returns in a lead role in Vinu Anand’s film ‘Heart Beats’

Back to where she belongs Simran

“It gives me immense pleasure to come back to Malayalam, the industry which gave me the first break down South. Though I made my debut in Hindi, it was Indraprastham, which gave me the visibility and acceptance I could bank on,” says Simran who is all set to start a second innings with Vinu Anand’s film Heart Beats.

Produced by Tri Star Films, the film, scripted by Babu Janardhanan, also stars Indrajith, Jagathy Sreekumar and Charuhasan.

“I play the protagonist Nancy, a good-natured girl. There are no shades or undertones to this character. It is a simple story of how she comes up in life through friendship. I was fascinated by the title Heart Beats. It is suc h a pulsating term, so full of life.”

The actor took a break at the peak of her career to devote time to herself. After a gap of three years, marriage and motherhood, Simran now resumes her work as an actor.

“One needs to take care of the emotional self too. Fame and success bring happiness, but personal life is also important. Now that I am comfortably settled, I thought of pursuing my passions — dance and acting.”

Right role

Simran who came back to the limelight with some product endorsements has been waiting for the right role for a re-launch.

“I have been looking at scripts from all the South Indian languages. It was Malayalam that clicked first. And I am quite sentimental about Malayalam, as it provided the platform to launch my career.”

Simran was hand picked at a talent hunt conducted by Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited in 1996.

She, along with other winners Arshad Warsi, Chandrachur Singh and Priya Gill, were cast in Tere Mere Sapne produced by ABCL.

“My film with Mammootty, Indraprastham, happened immediately after Tere Mere Sapne. Then I moved to Tamil and Telugu where I worked in more than 50 films.”

Tamil hits

Her hits in Tamil include Kannathil Muthamittal, Parthale Paravasam, Pammal K Sammandham, Vaali, Priyamanavale and Kovilpatti Veera Lakshmi.

“I would like to add two more films to the list — Naerukku Naer and New. Nerukku Ner was produced by Mani Ratnam and the cast included Vijay, Surya, Kousalya and myself. All of us we re at the beginning of our careers then. The film, directed by Vasanth, proved to be a huge hit. New was S.J. Suryah’s first acting venture. I was at the peak of my career when I agreed to work with him. The whole industry was ap prehensive when I signed up with a newcomer. But I have never looked at a film in terms of the hero’s star value or the film makers’ track record.”

Simran admits that she loves and respects the scale and finish of a big hero - big director project. And makes it clear, “The willingness to experiment is very important. As an actor, one gets enough space for innovation and creativity while working with new directors. I am hoping that Heart Beats will also give me ample scope for performance.”

Simran will soon be working on a Telugu Film with Balakrishna. A role, which she claims is “one of a kind.” Well, what is it that Simran hopes to achieve in her second innings in the film industry? Very rare, once-in-a-lifetime characters?

“Not at all. I will continue to work the way I used to. At the moment, there is nothing particular I am aiming at. I plan to pursue whatever interests me. It could be anything — song, dance, romance, offbeat or ordinary.”
