“The bigger the better” is the mantra women follow when it comes to handbags. Most career women literally carry their home and office responsibilities in their bags.
The kind of things you could find in a woman’s bag could range from a simple key to a kaleidoscope of paperwork, make-up and phone.
Big bags with two to three divisionsare user-friendly. For colour and class, women can go in for bags with crocodile, snake or leopard prints. During summer, a spacious crochet bag, especially while travelling, looks contemporary. “Even in the fashion world, it’s no more about being stylish at the cost of comfort. So whether it is clothes, shoes or bags, the winner is one who packs it all — style, comfort, utility and variety.
Plenty of prints
Karishma Mansata, a regular master of ceremonies and party girl, prefers carrying big bags with abstract features such as zebra prints, jungle prints, or polka dots. And also one that complements her outfits.
If not a bag, a small silk pouch with clutches fashioned from a diamond bangle could be perfect for an evening party.
Keeping the ‘big’ mantra in mind, Nidhi Agarwal, accounts executive with a PR firm, prefers carrying big bags to office as well as to a formal event. Her wardrobe consists of huge leather bags in different shapes and in single subtle colours. She reveals that one of her favourites is a Chloe from Malaysia, designed in a rectangular shape with well worked leather buckles on the front.
The bag consists of two major divisions and three small compartments, with separate sections for mobile phone, make-up, visiting cards and a zipped-up little pocket to keep money.
Nowadays, compact clutch-purses that are easy to handle and suitable for all occasions, are preferred by many women.According to Suraj Chawla, a designer, “Metallic clutch-purses are making it big in India. They go well with Indian as well as western attire. They can be carried to a formal or a casual occasion. And for a touch of glamour, embroidery on silk fabric will do well. Otherwise clutch-purses made of canvas, polished with sober colours are best for summer.”
Chelna Lekhi, an accessory and bag designer, uses a lot of beads, stones and jewellery such as anklets, chains and pendants as embellishments on bags.
With bags getting a seasonal look, specialised fabrics are being used to make them. Semi-cotton fabrics are seen as summer friendly.
Those who want variety, can add a macramé bag to their collection.
If one wants to be innovative, try adding leather straps to the macramé bag which enhances the natural look, says Chandrashekar, another designer.
Most of his bags do not have zips or buckles. He instead innovatively useschopsticks for clasps and coconut shells for buttons.
With so much choice, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and bag yet another one!
