Beautiful climbers The ivy plant
Ivies are ideal for pots, hanging baskets, hanging from cabinets and walls or trained on the walls and supports and beddings.
Belonging to the family Araliaceae, the old Italian name, Ivy was the plant of Bacchus, the god of wine. The small leaved Hedera includes very few species prized for their dense low growth and small leaves which are leathery and are often lobed, and produce short aerial roots from the nodes of the stem.
When the roots come in contact with a damp surface they attach themselves to it.
Different kinds
Hedera Helix ‘Chicago’ (English Ivy) self clinging trailing perennial, has leaves with 3-5 lobes, of which one at the apex is more pointed or long.
They become more bushy if their growing tips are pinched at intervals. Leaves are 2” x 1 1 / 2” across. The unvariegated forms are big and green.
The variety forms have creamy edged leaves. Hedera Golden Heart has golden yellow patch at the centre of each lobed heart shaped leaf.
Hedera Canarienses (Canary Ivy) is a vigorous climber, with triangular, slightly lobed dark green leaves 5” long - 6” wide with pale green veins. Leaf stalk is red. Propagation is by cuttings rooted in sand and peat, in half shade.
