NEW KICKER While the curls are back, the straight, sleek look doesn’t seem to be making its way out for a long time to come

Bored with that same old blunt cut? Looking for a new chic hairstyle? Why not try the layered look that is doing the rounds this season? With the temperatures soaring, a majority of people are going in for short, low maintenance haircuts.

Spa treatments are gaining popularity far and wide. A visit to the different salons across the city highlights the fact that a change in hairstyle has become the order of the day and these beauty parlours are more than happy catering to the needs of their customers.

While the curls are back with a bang, the straight, sleek look doesn’t seem to be making its way out for a long time to come. “The funky, rough look is popular among youngsters,” reveals Rajneesh, Manager of a beauty salon in the city. “I however, prefer the formal hairdo,” he says.

Tracy of Chrysolite feels that the “wash and run” haircut is most preferred this season. “The fringe and bangs are in and everyone wants them,” she says, with an air of excitement.

Though the asymmetrical haircut is believed to be a favourite, Beena Sondhi, a hairdresser, points out that it is still “not wearable on the roads” and that not many women prefer the messy look.

She goes on to explain that “there is a misconception that hairstyles ought to be seasonal. The Indian face can carry off just about any hairstyle. There is no particular trend as there is in Europe”.

She also states that though the summer is in, very few people are opting for a short or cropped look. Rita Ho has many customers wanting the layered cuts as the “connected layers” are amongst the happening and most wanted hairstyles of the season.

As far as colouring of hair is concerned, brunette and coffee coloured tones go best with the Indian skin. Copper and mahogany are options for those with relatively darker skin

The wedge cut is a complete no-no, so are the blunt, straight and mushroom cuts. Though the scarlet shade of hair is not virtually popular as of now, die-hard fans of red coloured tresses need not worry as the trend is on its way back. Darker shades of blond are definitely not recommended for Indian skin.

However, rinsing hair under running water on a daily basis is a must in order to keep one’s hair clean, especially during this season.

It takes ounces of confidence to carry off any hairstyle. So wear the right style as well as the attitude it takes to make heads turn in awe!
