How do you know what happens when you kick a stone,” asked S. Ramachander, scholar-manager during the launch of his new book, “Manager of Work: A practitioner’s guide to being the best.”

“The outcome is predictable. Thanks to physics, you can actually judge direction, velocity and its likely destination. Now, what happens if you kick a sleeping dog? That’s the difference between linear operations model and the complexity of management processes today. But, unfortunately, management is taught exactly like how high school physics can be taught,” said the author, explaining the rationale behind writing the book. Ramachander’s book is divided into five sections: Setting the scene – the context for learning, The Consumer – who builds the brand, People Management, Developing the Organisation and Developing a Personal Agenda.

“Today’s manager must grapple with apparent opposites and paradoxes and develop a nuanced view that includes complexity and uncertainty,” the author said.

A. Satish Kumar, managing director, Henkel India, said Ramachander was one of his first bosses at work. “The book made for fascinating reading because of his ability to combine his work experience and role in academics. Things I learnt from the book include the difference between linear models and business and competitive adaptive systems.”

Arun Bewoor, managing director, International Flavours and Fragrances, said: “Ramachander’s book is a must for all managers in the present day who want to quickly and innovatively adapt themselves to the ever-changing environment to stave competition.

He has had the most ideal career any professional manager can aspire for. So the book provides a wide perspective from a person who has seen it and done it all.”
