New musical direction

Sandeep Chowta is the new head of Columbia Records and wishes to promote local talent

ON A TALENT HUNT Sandeep Chowta

Sandeep Chowta has tied up with Columbia Records to head the label in India. And the music director of hits “Mast” and “Jungle,” is on a quest for the best artistes and bands. Credited with discovering singing sensations such as Sunidhi Chauhan, Chowta has taken a sabbatical from Bollywood to follow his muse.

This includes working with Grammy nominee Bunny Brunel, his childhood music hero.

Chowta organised a three-city tour of Brunel and the Jazz All Stars including Grammy award winner Frank Gambale, keyboardist Mitch Forman and drummer Virgil Donati last year.

Such contacts with international musicians have led to the latest development and Chowta gives hope to many a local artiste.

“My career as an artiste will continue. I have signed on to the label as an artiste myself. But I’m more excited about what I can do on the business side here. I see this as a tremendous opportunity to bridge the gap between the record company and the artistes.”

While there could be opportunities of working with international artistes in the future, his focus is to “make artistes big in our country.”

For aspiring artistes

“Most of the shows and contests to discover new talent are not really substantial. The fame is fleeting and the artiste is forgotten in six months. Columbia is a label for aspiring artistes; if they have the talent, we will spot them”. Apparently, his team is eyeing college bands too, to spot and mould fresh talent.
