Ready for the rains

Women on the move will be happier wearing capris rather than billowing skirts with the rains coming down in buckets

Keep ’em short Knee-length skirts or capris are just what the doctor ordered for the season

While the city is being lashed by monsoon showers, one wonders how to stay stylish in the midst of the rains. Co-ordinating your outfit, accessories and footwear, is quite a task and fashion gurus suggest ways to look chic as well as comfortable whil e protecting yourself from the rain.

The perfect outfit for a casual day during the season would be capris teamed with a tank top. Shorts are also an option for those who dare, and want to take extra care against the slush.

Stylists suggest against wearing of full-length jeans, ankle-length skirts and formal trousers for obvious reasons. “Tee-shirts, strappy tops and halters are suggested for a casual look. For a formal day at work, one might consider wearing a knee length skirt paired with a formal shirt,” says Ameetha, a fashion designer.

The colours of the season include pink, blue and other pastel shades. Avoid wearing white as well as black during the day. According to Sangita .S, owner of a boutique: “As far as fabric is concerned, synthetic is highly recommended as it takes very little time to dry, when drenched. Cotton is a complete no-no considering the fact that it absorbs a larger amount of water and takes a relatively longer time to dry. Silk is also not a wise choice.”

Flip- flops are among the advised footwear for the rains. Boots have unfortunately lost their charm as most women would rather flaunt their legs rather than cover them. “Also not many would want to splurge on a pair of boots for a season as short as this,” says Sherill, a student. Designer stilettos are doing the rounds this wet season. For all of you who thought that the umbrella is completely outdated, think again! Fashion designers in the city say that the umbrella is the hottest accessory for the rainy season. Bright and vibrantly coloured umbrellas are in vogue now. Raincoats are no longer popular.

Large bags will continue to stay in fashion through the season. Transparent waterproof bags are fashionable and go well with almost any outfit.

As far as make up is concerned, avoid wearing mascara and eyeliner. Use only waterproof make up. The lip gloss is a “must carry”, believes Manisha, a beautician.

Hair pulled back in a high pony tail or a braid is the most preferred hairstyles this season. Other stylish headgear include brightly coloured hair-bands. In an effort to look stylish in the rain, the comfort factor must not be discarded or substituted. What matters most is how one carries herself, come rain or shine!
