A milestone for Ranga Shankara
Ranga Shankara’s production of Girish Karnad’s “Odakalu Bimba” is scheduled for its 25th show this month. The play is directed by Girish Karnad and K.M. Chaitanya and features Arundhati Nag as a feisty Kannada writer who sudde
nly becomes an international celebrity by writing a best-seller in English. Nag’s Manjula is then haunted by a question of whether by opting for the global audience she has betrayed her own language and identity.
The play explores the dilemma of Indian writers who choose to write in English and is said to be a scathing look at the Indian literary establishment as well as a moving story of conflict and the desire for fame.
The play has been produced in three languages so far and the three versions of the play have collectively seen 67 shows. The milestone of the 25th show will be crossed with three stagings at 7.30 p.m. on June 2 and at 3.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. on June 3.
Three shows of the Hindi version of the play “Bikhre Bimb” are also scheduled to be performed at the end of June.
