For a happy holiday

Going on a vacation with your family? Great. But before you set out, there are some things you need to check out.

So here goes:

* Confirm your reservation, including hotel, air, car, train, dining and activity reservations. A few phone calls before you leave can save you from a lot of stress later on.

* Remember to cancel your newspaper delivery. You can save some money.

* Organise the credit cards you plan to take with you. Ensure you have enough balance. Order travellers cheques from your bank. Make a list of emergency numbers to call if your credit cards or travellers cheques get stolen.

* If you are visiting a foreign country, order a small amount of that country’s currency from your bank to take with you.

* Pack as light as possible or consider shipping large bags, golf and ski equipment to your destination. For more information, log on to www.sportsexpress.com.

* Before you leave, check the weather at your destination ( www.weather.com) for last-minute wardrobe adjustments.

* If you are flying, call the airline and confirm if flight is departing on time. It saves a lot of time and energy, especially if there are kids in tow.

* Pack your camera and video equipment at least 24 hours before leaving home. This way you can make sure all the necessary batteries have been charged.

* If you are flying, pack a small carry bag of essentials you can’t be without in case your checked-in baggage arrives late. And if there are kids, ensure you have their reading material and feeding bottles in place.

* If you are driving, make sure you have a road atlas handy. You can also look up driving directions online before you go ( www.mapblast.com) and find out approximate driving times.
