My hair has become thin. My scalp is visible when I apply oil. I feel it has been due to continuous removal of lice. Will my hair grow? Is there a chance of getting back my hair? Please suggest a home remedy. Neetu

Yes, there are chances of the hair growing, but you have to get rid of lice first. Pay attention to your diet. Tying the hair tightly all the time can sometimes cause thinning of the hair at the scalp, especially in the front. Apply oil only once or twice a week. Keep the scalp clean. Wash your hair four times a week. If you have lice, apply vinegar half an hour before shampooing. Remove the nits (eggs) first and then wash the hair. Vinegar helps loosen the nits, thereby making it easier to remove them by hand. After shampoo, have a vinegar rinse. Add four tablespoons of vinegar to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. Then, use a fine-toothed comb meant for lice removal. Eat a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean, curd and paneer in your diet.

I have thick lips. How can I make them look small? Sakshi

You can make your lips look smaller with the use of lipsticks. Dark colours and matte lipsticks are advisable. Gloss and shine make the lips look fuller. Also, outline the lips using a lip pencil, keeping inside your natural lip line and use a darker colour of lipstick in the centre. Use a brush to apply it. You can perfect it with a little practice.

I heard that sandalwood can be used to get rid of pimples. Shweta

Sandalwood has germicidal, antiseptic and protective properties. It helps soothe the skin and heal eruptions. Believed to have cooling properties, it has been used for centuries to heal heat rashes and boils. Sandalwood paste can be applied directly on pimples. You can also add a little rose water to the paste and apply it on the face if the skin is oily and prone to pimples.

I have short, bushy hair. What should I do to have long hair that’s less bushy? Can you please suggest home remedies for increasing the length and reducing bushiness. Trisha

It is difficult to change the texture of one’s hair. However, twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply it on the scalp and the hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three or four times. This helps the hair and the scalp absorb the oil better. Use a mild herbal shampoo. After shampooing, apply a creamy conditioner, taking very little of it. Massage it lightly into the hair. Leave it on for two minutes and rinse it off. You can also apply a “leave-on” type of conditioner or hair serum. It will make the hair more manageable. The average rate of growth lengthwise is half an inch per month. This can be influenced by hereditary factors. Diet is important. Include fresh fruits, sprouts, soyabean, dals, curd, paneer, fish and chicken in your diet.

How can cracks on the heels be prevented? Priya

Cracked heels can be prevented by giving the feet daily care, by way of massage with creams and oils. Before bathing, apply til oil on the feet and heels, massaging it into the skin. This not only softens the skin, but also protects it from the drying effects of soap. Scrub with a loofah while bathing. Immediately after a bath, apply cream daily on the heels, while the skin is still damp. This helps seal the moisture. Once a week, soak the feet in hot water for 15 to 20 minutes, after adding some coarse salt to it. Then scrub with a pumice stone or loofah. Wash and apply cream.

I want to apply eye shadow. Tell me how to do it.Priti

Use powder eye shadows, as they are easier to apply. You will need applicators and brushes. Sponge tipped applicators are good for applying eye shadow, while brushes help blend them. Blending is important. Choose a shade to give the basic shape to the eyes. Browns and greys are commonly used. You can also try pink, blue or green. Use a darker shade in the socket of the eye. This helps add depth. A lighter shade of the same colour can be used on the rest of the eyelid. A light colour should be used just under the outer part of the brows.

I have lots of split ends. My scalp is oily, but the ends of my hair are dry. What do I do? Aparna

Trim the split ends. Cut off the split ends. Twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply it on the scalp and hair at night. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three or four times. Leave it on overnight and wash the hair the following day.

After shampooing, apply a creamy conditioner only at the ends of the hair (i.e. where the split ends form).

Leave it on for two minutes and wash it off with water. Or, you can apply curd or egg yolk on the ends and the juice of a lemon on the scalp, half an hour before shampooing.
