What Clark Gable loved
Does Caesar Salad have anything to do with history? Unfortunately, no. But its origin is no less interesting. In 1924, there was a small restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. Owner Caesar Cardini, running low on supplies one day, was forced to put together a salad from leftovers. He tossed chopped garlic, croutons, Parmesan cheese, boiled eggs, olive oil and Worcester sauce in a bowl and on a flat plate, arranged the mix and romaine leaves in a circle. This was voted as ‘the greatest recipe to originate from the Americas in fifty years’ by the International Society of Epicures in Paris. People began to drive to Tijuana for a Caesar Salad.
Movie stars (Clark Gable, Jean Harlow) crossed the border for the plate of greens. By 1948, the salad was being served all over north America but by this time, Cardini had patented the dressing.
