Nasser says versatility is a must for every actor

Intellectual Knowledgeable

Nasser constantly scouts for challenging roles. Not surprising, given the actor’s multifacetedness. Quiz him on his versatility and he gives the most humble reply: “Whats the big deal in that? I am an actor and I should be prepared to per form any role from character to villain, comedy and hero.”

Debut

Nasser made his debut in the tinsel town with Balachandar’s ‘Kalyana Agathigal’. So far, he has acted in over 200 films in a career spanning two decades. He has also wielded the megaphone for four films – ‘Avatharam’, ‘Devadhai’, ‘Maayan’ and ‘Popcorn.’

“I enjoy directing, no doubt. But still acting is more important as I wish to be recognised as an actor first,” says the alumnus of the SIFCC Institute of Film Acting.

Also Nasser does not believe in making films for getting awards. “I can’t understand the logic. No film can be made just for the sake of bagging awards. If the subject is fresh and movie is good then the honour automatically,” he asserts.

Close to his heart

Nasser considers his role in ‘Emdan Magan’ as one of his best and makes a special mention about the director Thirumurugan’s (‘Metti Oli’ fame) cooperation. “Thirumurugan gave me freedom and it helped me a lot. The role was a very satisfying,” he says.

On working with Kamalhasan: “He is a creative artiste and it is a pleasure to act in his films. He tells beforehand what he expects from us and that makes things easier. He knows how to bring out the best in an actor.”

Nasser’s performance in ‘Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi’ was much-appreciated. He is continuing his association with Vadivelu in ‘Indiralogathil Na. Azhagappan.’ “The audience expect films like ‘Imsai…’ once in a while and the success of the movie is a clear indication. Acting with Vadivelu is an enjoyable experience. He has a great sense of humour and times it to perfection.”

Nasser plans to direct a short film on issues relating to environment. “Pollution is a major cause of concern today. The future generation has to lead a healthy life and there is a need to create awareness among people on the harmful effects of pollution. The short film is based on this concept and I am likely to begin the project in December,” he says.
