K.S.Chandrasekar is the winner of the Best Business Academic, 2006. It was the passion for teaching that propelled this 39-year-old ‘industry-tuned academician’, as he would like to be called, into academics.
Love for teaching
Dr. Chandrasekar says, “I realised that I was cut out for teaching during my stint at Hindustan Latex. I had also teachers in my family to look up to.” He was an assistant manager (Regional Management) with Hindustan Latex Ltd., before he took up teaching.
As senior lecturer with Alagappa University, Karaikudi, he was involved in setting up an Institute of Management there and also conducting distance-learning management programmes. He joined the University of Kerala in 2002 and has held various responsibilities.
His selection as the Best Business Academic Year of the 2006, awarded by the Indian Commerce Association, came about through a multi-pronged process that involved rigorous evaluation and cumulative grading. His paper, ‘Action Attitude Model for Global Brand Building – An Insight for Indian Companies,’ was chosen from among 514 papers submitted at the 59th All-India Commerce Conference at Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam, in December 2006. Chandrasekar is the second person to receive the award and the first from Kerala. He has taught in major universities in South India and in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore and UAE. He has also authored a book titled ‘Product Management – Text and Cases.’
“I tell my students to read three to four textbooks to understand different perspectives so as to become better managers,” says the teacher. He recommends reading “magazines and journals besides browsing the Internet.”
Dr. Chandrasekar believes that good managers are made and defines a good manager as someone who has the “experience, practical wisdom and the ability to foresee challenges in the environment in the future.”
