Oikyotaan will present a concert of folk music at the Alliance Francaise on July 14, 7 p.m. The group, founded by Bonnie Chakraborty, is a research and performance-based contemporary folk platform which has developed a sound deeply rooted in the melo
dy and rhythm of Indian folk music. Having conducted many workshops over the last six years in Chennai and Kolkata with renowned baul singer Kartick Das Baul, one of the workshops culminated in a performance at the Berlin world sacred music festival.Oikyotaan comprises Kartick Das Baul (vocals, percussion and khomok), Paul Jacob (bass, salangais and vocals), K. V. Balakrishnan (dholki, etc), Donan Murray (guitars and vocals) and Saravanan (tavil).
For the presentation at the Alliance Francaise, Chennai, in connection with the celebration of French National Day, Oikyotaan will showcase their brand of contemporary folk music and new workshops with the Indian classical form thumri, and their team from Chennai.
