‘The Sugar Baron’s Daughter’ is rooted in reality, says author Loveleen Kacker

Sixteen books in almost 20 years. Prolific – best describes Loveleen Kacker, for the lady is not even a full-time writer. Three novels and many children’s books were born even as Kacker dabbled with the rigours of administration.

A Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Kacker has now hit the stands with her latest novel, “The Sugar Baron’s Daughter.” The author has woven a tale of ambition, love and lust around the Mandal agitation and the travails of farmers in the sugar belt. Issues that are still simmering are meant to be at the core of this fictional work. “A serious writer has to reflect the times,” says Kacker. “Writing has to be rooted in what is happening around you,” she adds.

Her last novel, “Terror in the Jungle” dealt with the Naxalite movement.

“As a writer, I have to tell a good story. I did not want to write a tale that is not rooted.”

“The sugar sector fascinated me,” she says. Kacker acknowledges that her career as a civil servant came to her aid here. She was associated with the sector for over five years, had seen the sugar bowls across the country and interacted with those involved.

“The Sugar Baron’s Daughter”, a Harper Collins publication, has been tough to pen, recollects the IAS officer. Always on the fast mode, she took six years to complete the novel.
