A journey

A retired literature teacher and a bank robber meet in Patrice Leconte’s Man on the train, an elegant French mystery.

By chance, they spend some time together.

Each begins to wish he could have lived the other’s life.

The film looks unflinchingly at friendship between men without placing sex, money, or power as roadblocks.

The real draw in the film is the believable characters created by scenarist Claude Klotz.

The dialogue is minimal, with periods of silence between the two men, which are as meaningful as their spoken words.

The cinematographer, Jean-Marie Dreujou, has given the film an unusually rich look, all autumnal browns and golds.

The film is a gorgeous reminder to know what you want, but also to appreciate what you have.

The film provides a coherent end and allows us to ponder as we leave.

Patrice Leconte began making films in the mid- 1970s, but the last decade has proved to be his most prolific and creative period.

He has given 31 films till date.

Konangal will screen the film tomorrow at Ashwin Hospital Auditorium, off Sathy Road, near GP theatre.

The screening begins at 5.45 p.m. For details, call: 94430-39630, or visit
