Car and bike questions? We have the answers

My father is all set to buy a new car and has short-listed the Maruti Swift petrol and Hyundai Getz Prime. Please recommend one.

Jafar Rehman

The Getz Prime is a good city car with lots of passenger space. However, the 1.1-litre engine is a bit underpowered and this means more effort is required from the driver to keep up with the flow of traffic. The 1.3 is available, but is rather expensive. The Swift is not as spacious but we feel it is an overall better car, thanks to better performance, efficiency and resale value.

I bought a Hyundai Santro one year ago. It has clocked 12,000 km at present. How can I reduce the bumpy ride? And when should I change the tyres?

Jagrut Phatak

One of the big weaknesses of the Santro is the bumpy ride and we are afraid there is not much you can do about this except switch to tubeless tyres, as the supple tyre sidewalls act as additional shock absorbers and marginally soften the ride. You should change your tyres when the tread depth drops below 2mm or if the tyres are more than four years old. However, since you are looking to improve the ride of the Santro, you should change them immediately.

I was looking to buy a new vehicle and have taken a liking to the TVS Star City. My brother has a Victor GX, which gives him a mileage of around 67+. Can I expect the Star City to deliver more mileage, around 70-80kpl

?

Maheedhar

Mileage depends on several factors including riding habits, road conditions, vehicle payload etc. So, it is possible for the same bike to give very good mileage in certain condition but not in all. For example, your brother’s Victor GX that is returning 67+kpl under favourable conditions. However, the same bike drops its economy to as low as 25kpl when faced with unfavourable conditions. Having said this, a Star City will certainly return better fuel economy when ridden under identical conditions as a Victor GX.

We are planning to buy a Fiat Palio Stile. However, we are unable to decide between the 1.1-litre SLX and 1.6-litre Sport variants. Other than the price difference between the models and the styling, my concern is tow

ards mileage and the best value buy. Please advise.

Arindam Gupta

The choice is quite clear. The 1.1 is far more fuel-efficient than the 1.6. The only reason to buy the 1.6 is if you like driving and performance, as the bigger-engined Palio is one of the best driver’s cars around.
