FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said that football’s world governing body has decided to allow matches to be conducted at high altitudes thus going back on its earlier decision to disallow matches at venues which are located above 2500 metres MSL. The earlier decision by FIFA had ruled out several important venues in South America such as the stadium in La Paz in Bolivia which has hosted several important matches in the past.

Former England batsman Graham Thorpe has been picked as the assistant coach for the New South Wales cricket team in Australia for the next season. He will work under the chief coach Mathew Mott. Thorpe will also be the coach of the New South Wales second eleven. He is clearly happy to have been entrusted with his coaching assignment and feels that it will be a new kind of challenge for him.


France’s football star Zinedine Zidane recently undertook a coaching stint in Indonesia to popularise the sport in that country and develop talent among the poor children there. After playing for a brief while with the president of the country to start off his tour, Zidane donned jeans and a polo shirt and coached the children’s team and played with them for about 10 minutes in a friendly game that ended with a 1-1 score.

Indian cricketer Suresh Raina feels that the competition in domestic cricket has to be raised considerably for the country to produce top quality international players. He said recently that the domestic set up should be more competitive otherwise when a player graduates from domestic cricket to the international level he finds the going really tough and often fails to live up to expectations.


Boxer Wladimir Klitschko defeated Lamon Brewster and scored a technical knockout after the sixth round to successfully defend his International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization titles recently. “I have waited for this fight for three years,” Klitschko said. “This was incredibly important for me. Today I could not lose. My confidence was such I simply could not lose.”
