It wasn’t a book reading of the usual sorts, but a conversation between two intellectual minds discussing the book India After Gandhi – The History of the World’s Greatest Democracy. Author of the book, Ramachandra Guha and author and Professor of Political Science at University of Hyderabad, Jyotirmaya Sharma, held centrestage and a select audience captivated with their in-depth discussion and analysis of the book.

The book India After Gandhi- the History of the World’s Greatest Democracy by Ramachandra Guha is the outcome of many years of research and as the title suggests, it explores India- the country, its political agenda, the peopl e behind it all and even its evolution, post-1947. The book speaks about the repercussions of political decisions made during this era and also covers many ‘what if?’ situations

After the discussion, the floor was thrown open to the audience. Many had read the 700-odd page tome and were curious to know more- Should there be a role model for nationalism and how can it be achieved? Can an ideal state of democracy be achieved? And even those who confessed to not having read the book had their share of questions.

The author’s extensive research has brought out interesting and little known facts of India’s history and the political milieu of the country. As the author himself puts it- “India is not only the world’s largest democracy, but also the most interesting.”
