Here are some dos and don’ts for travelling pregnant women
|
HAVE FUN Even pregnant women can travel
Okay, you’ve booked your tickets months in advance for that long-awaited trip to Paris. And then, month before the journey date, you discover you are pregnant.
The family is thrilled as expected.
But, the husband and you are ruing over your lost vacation.
A teeny- weeny voice in the corner of your heart asks, “Can’t we please check with the doctor?”
And, this is what the doctor will say. Unless there is a specific complication, or women are either too early or late into their pregnancies, they can continue to fly well near their delivery date. The only thing you have to avoid as far as possible are places that require you to vaccinate yourself against certain diseases. Presuming you are flying to your destination, here are a few tips.
■Try and book a seat near the rest room. The nearer the delivery date, the more you’ll need to empty your bladder.
■Book a seat that is comfortable. Travellers recommend an aisle seat, as movement is easier. And, place a small pillow under your back to avoid strain.
■If you can afford it, go in for a first class ticket. Before booking your ticket, confirm with the airline till which month it will allow pregnant women to travel (each airline has its own rule).
■Always carry a medical certificate from your doctor about your current health , and another permitting you to travel.
If a complication arises, your case history will come in handy.
■Carry a CD player and some soothing melodies for the journey. It will relax you and the baby.
■Always carry your own food. Avoid eating junk food at this stage. Opt for fresh fruits and juice packs.
■Snack frequently, this will help tackle morning sickness.
■Walk around and stretch mildly frequently; it prevents soreness and stiffness as well as blood clots.
■Pregnant women need to drink gallons of water. So, carry water.
Refrain from drinking water outside unless you are sure it has been purified.
■Plan travel in the second trimester. You are more comfortable then, and the general risk of miscarriage and preterm labour is lower.
■Dress suitably. So, go ahead and have fun! But, be careful!
