As India turns 60, BBC World has lined up a series of programmes

With the Independence Day of India and Pakistan around the corner, BBC World airs a month-long season India & Pakistan 07, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the two countries’ freedom from British rule.

According to Narendhra Morar, Commissioning Editor, BBC World, this time, the attempt is to explore the present and what this might hold for the future, rather than looking back at the well-documented past. So, no Partition stories, no profiles of freedom fighters this time.

Instead there are documentaries that look at India’s integration into the global economy. “We have a fast-paced documentary Indian School on the lines of African School which looks at the pupils’ , parents’ and teachers’ dreams and anxieties in the changing world. The film has been shot in two Pune schools,” informs Narendhra from London.

“Then there is Wedding Business which follows a young Indian couple preparing for their wedding and goes behind the scenes to explore the business aspect of this multi-million dollar industry.

It shows how a social custom has become a reflection of India’s growing economic power,” says Narendhra.

Another interesting feature is the two-part documentary, The Other Side, reflecting the character of India and Pakistan.

“In the series, an Indian visits Pakistan and a Pakistani visits India to gain an insight into each other’s countries.”
