Traffic troubles

Why can’t we learn some road etiquette, wonders Aishwarya Ganesh

Blocking the ‘free left’ path, crossing the yellow line, taking ‘U’ turns where it is not allowed, ignoring signals in the absence of traffic police — these are everyday sights.

If anyone asks us what should be done to end the traffic woes, we immediately say the police should be more vigilant.

But, it is high time we realised that the onus rests on us too to ensure that the roads remain safe. We tend to ignore the seriousness of the issue, unless we bear the brunt of someone else’s carelessness.

Take, for instance, talking on cell phones while driving. Despite knowing it is dangerous, people continue doing it wilfully.

The Government can only set rules. We need to follow them.
