The Madras Musical Association choir and orchestra performs Handel’s Messiah on September 8
|
The 60-member Madras Musical Association choir and a 15-member orchestra led by Jerry Fernandez will present Handel’s Messiah on September 8 at 6.30 p.m. at the Museum Theatre, under the batons of Samuel Grubb and Augustine Paul.
The Messiah is perhaps the most performed piece of classical choral music since its premiere in Dublin in 1742. The oratorio was composed by George Frederic Handel to the libretto of Charles Jennens in Leicester, England in a garden temple which is preserved to this day.
The premiere of The Messiah was conducted by Mathew Dubourg with Handel himself playing the harpsichord. Later, Handel always conducted the oratorio making subtle changes to suit solo voices.
The Madras Musical Association has performed The Messiah many times before but this is the first time it is being sung to orchestral accompaniment as the composer composed it.
The MMA choir is 114 years old and has been performing regularly in the city and outside it. Notable performances have been at the International Church Music Festival in Coventry, England in 1998 and 2000 and in Chester, England in 2006.
The choir has also performed at the torch relay festival in Newcastle, Australia and at the Sydney Opera House in connection with the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Donor passes for the concert, priced at Rs. 200, Rs. 300, Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000, are available at Musee Musical (ph: 2852 2780/ 2851 6474) and with members of the choir.
