Car and bike questions? We have the answers

Of the Alto, Swift, Santro and Getz, which is best in terms of low maintenance costs, which will last longer and which is corrosion resistant? I travel around 15-20km per day.

S R Subramanian

The Alto will be the lightest on your pocket. Modern manufacturing techniques ensure all the cars today are long lasting. But if you had to choose between the four, we’d suggest the Santro. It’s compact, easy to drive and light on the pocket.

I have been using a Maruti 800 since 2000. I want to change my car as it has been giving me problems lately. I looking for good mileage, low maintenance and a vehicle small in size. Besides the Alto, which other car w

ould suit my needs? I want your comments on the Spark and Indica diesel.

Srinath

If you want to stick to Maruti, then we’d recommend the Swift. The Spark is a great city run-around. The ride is good and the engine is fuel-efficient. The Indica diesel on the other hand will save you a lot in terms of running costs, but it still has a few rough edges and quality niggles can be irritating, which may result in unscheduled visits to the service station. Out of the Indica and Spark, we’d say the Spark.

I wish to buy a car with automatic transmission. My budget is between Rs. 4-6 lakh. Please suggest a few options?

Sivaraman

In your budget, you only have the option of the Hyundai Santro Automatic. If you buy a used car, the old Honda City Automatic and the Lancer Automatic are fine.

I own a Maruti 800, 1997 model and would like to know whether the oil change for this model is at 5,000km or 10,000km. Some Maruti dealers say 5000 while the others say 10,000. Which is true?

Jayakrishnan. G

Generally, petrol engines have a service interval of 5,000km. It’s best to check your owner’s manual for the correct interval. If using mineral engine oil, then you may stick to the recommended interval. If using synthetic engine oil then you may extend the oil change interval to 10,000km.

I want to buy a car and I will use it for around 25km per day. I want a model that won’t be outdated for at least the next five years. We are a family of four and my budget is Rs. 4 lakh.

Venkatesan

The Swift fits your requirements perfectly. You may have to stretch your budget slightly but it will be worth it. It’s a new design, peppy and reasonably fuel-efficient. But if you can’t stretch your budget, then we’d say go for the Santro.
