Chat Karan Johar on double standards
|
The entertainer Karan Johar
People say time is money but Karan Johar feels these days time costs money. In Delhi to promote a watch company, Karan says for creative people time can’t be money. “In all my films if I had saved on time I would have saved lots of money,
but then it would not have satisfied my creative instincts.”
Karan holds he is not diluting his brand by engaging himself in too many activities. “It is a way to be accessible to my audience in different ways. If I promote a brand, I also talk in business forums.” Raising a variety of expectations? “It is always a paradox. To me it is always better to raise lots of expectations than people having no expectation.”
Talking of expectations, people are expecting a lot from Om Shanti Om, where Karan has designed the costumes.
“Well, it is more of a hobby. Farah was very clear in her mind on how to create the 1970s’ mood. I have just carried out her directions. It is a reincarnation story set in Bollywood. The first half is set in the ’70s when bell bottoms and big buns were a rage and the second half is very now.”
Most journalists who cover cinema are jealous of Karan, for the stars always open up to Karan on issues for which journalists get a ‘no comments’ reply and a lecture on respecting the privacy of public figures. “They open up to me because they know me personally. They dine with me, work with me.” Still is it not a case of double standards, since whatever they share on his show becomes public? “No, I don’t ask anything which has never been in the public domain, something that’s just between the guest and me.” He recently reminded Akshaye Khanna that as a kid he didn’t allow him to play badminton. “It was fun.” But Akshaye seemed embarrassed. Moving on to the choice of guests on his show, Karan denies that he is catering to his coterie. “Himesh Reshammiya is not my friend. Yes, this is true that I have not been able to bring in Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. I have tried, but Salman gives so few interviews and Aamir you know...”
Next revolution
On his tie-up with NDTV, Karan feels the next revolution is going to happen in television. “We have been able to bring back the good old days of films, now it is the turn of television. The medium has great potential. Remember the days of Hum Log, Buniyaad and Tamas. I want to revive that level of content.” As for films, he is working on a script. “I wanted the title “Khan”, but it’s already with somebody.”
