Impressive A dance performance in full flow
Music has no religion and it knows no boundaries. It has the power to unite people, irrespective of caste, creed or even nations. As if to emphasise this, the Embassy of Vietnam and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations came together to hold an o
outstanding cultural event, an evening of traditional dance, music and songs from Vietnam, recently at New Delhi’s Kamani auditorium.
The event, part of a cultural exchange programme between India and Vietnam, was part of efforts to diversify and deepen the cultural relationship between the two countries.
The songs rendered by the singers were based on the highlands of Vietnam, spring season and harvest days. The performances of the dancers all through these songs expressed the zest, happiness and activities of the local natives and farmers of Vietnam during these times. The main singers were Manh Hung, Thanh Son, Mac Thuy and Hai Phuong.
The viewers were overwhelmed by their music too. A musician played the tune of a Hindi song “Mai Ni Mai” from the movie Hum Aapke Hai Koun on a single string instrument called monochord. Yet another created amazingly different sounds like a bird’s chirping and a cuckoo’s voice with his six different-sized flutes. Two women percussionists produced unique music by the sound of claps on an extraordinary bamboo instrument. The major instruments used in the show were the violin, the flute, the guitar, the drum and the zither.
Fashion show
There was a fashion show too, which followed soon after. It was called “The beauty of Vietnamese souls”. Putting on the typical Vietnamese attire, the models used hand fans, umbrellas, lanterns, lotus flowers and farmers’ hats as props, indicating the simplicity of their culture. The dance performance “Vietnam My Beautiful Country” described the country’s natural beauty and grace in an artistic and creative way. The dances were choreographed by Huu Tu and Anh Phuong. The original music was by Thao Giang, Ha Quang, Xuan Phuong and Duc Trinh.
The song “Pal Pal Har Pal” from the movie Lage Raho Munna Bhai, rendered by singers Manh Hung and Mac Thuy was the surprise package of the evening. Both Indian and Vietnamese music lovers came together to applaud the performance. Except for this song, the rest of the songs were all in Vietnamese. Though it was difficult to understand them, the melody and softness of Vietnamese music touched everybody’s heart. There was bonhomie all round as Vietnamese diplomats honoured all the artistes at the end of the show.
