Italian restaurant inBasant Lok, Sartoria, has revamped its menu

Mama Mia An Italian delicacy

It’s a quaint restaurant in Basant Lok market, Vasant Vihar, that serves Italian cuisine. Sartoria, which means ‘fashionable street’ in Italian, with its complete wooden décor and mild lighting is nice and cosy.

The year-and-a-half-old restaurant has several levels. The kitchen is in the basement, which will soon turn into a see-through one, says Rajeev Bajaj, the General Manager. The private dining space is on the mezzanine floor and a few steps above is the general dining area.

The restaurant’s latest menu is exhaustive, thanks to the experienced Executive Chef Pitamber D. Satyawali. The menu is pictorial and explanatory, which makes life easier for the ‘cuisine illiterate’. Here’s a place where even the vegetarian will not be disappointed with the options on offer. Each section is divided into vegetarian and non-vegetarian, with each having over half-a-dozen items. Marinated three capsicums, parma ham with melon, asparagus and artichoke, corn tomato and cheese, and cannelloni beans with balsamic from the starters, i.e. anti-pasti section, serve as the perfect way to begin the gastronomic journey.

The snacks section has the cute-looking mini veg calzone, mouth-watering deep-fried mozzarella, cold tomato bocconcini, poached shrimp dumpling pizzola and deep fried squid rings that are just too tantalising. In the soup section, don’t forget to order the cream of asparagus or the garlic flavoured tomato soup. The former is fresh but heavy, and the latter is light with strong flavours.

The restaurant stocks some selective Italian wines to go along with your food, which are available by glass. Penne/farfalle/fussile with assorted vegetable and spicy tomato soup and lasagna Bolognese are some picks from the list of pastas. As for the main course, try assorted vegetable ragout and risotto with assorted vegetables, herbs and tomato. The restaurant is proud of its thin crust pizzas as well, which are hand-rolled and made in a mango wood-fired oven to give the right taste. The warm mousse that seeps from the thin pancake is too good to resist and is accompanied by vanilla ice cream, while the cheese cake is mild in taste.

The Italians usually round their meal off with a cup of strong coffee and, if you love coffee, then you better not give this one a miss. Even though it’s not on the food menu, the restaurant has a small coffee machine that grinds the imported Italian beans to give you a fresh cuppa with an intoxicating aroma. The complimentary mint-filled chocolate is just perfect to bid adieu! Open from 11 a.m. to midnight. A meal for two would cost Rs.1,200. For reservations call 41683305.
