JUICY AND SWEET Papaya
Papaya is an appetiser, digestive, carminative, diuretic; cures inflammation, spleen enlargement, removes urinary concretions, relieves obesity, is used in the treatment of bleeding piles, wounds of the urinary tract and skin diseases. The seeds are
also said to be vermifuge; but they are mostly used as an emmenagogue. The root is ground and mixed with salt to make a paste which is then mixed with water and the resulting solution used as an enema, which is supposed to cause abortion. The dry leaves when placed in water, from yellowish red liquor which is drunk to cure stomach troubles. The seeds are used for making the skin smooth and delicate; it is given in small doses against round worms with excellent results.
Culinary uses
Both the green (unripe) and yellow (ripe) fruit are used in curries, salads and desserts.
Now, for a recipe.
Honey and papaya salad
Ingredients
Papaya (ready to eat): 750 gm
Lemon juice: 10 ml
Honey: 10 ml
Red chilli, fresh: 1
Mint leaves: 2
Rock salt: a pinch
Roasted sesame seeds: a pinch (for garnish)
Method: Dice the papaya and keep it in a fridge. Make a mixture of honey, lemon juice, chopped mint, chopped chilli and a pinch of rock salt. Stir it in a mixing bowl for two minutes and add the chilled papaya. Mix slowly with a wooden ladle. Transfer it to serving bowl. Add roasted sesame seed as a garnish and serve chilled.
