David Brolls

Maggie’s mother used to say I was the male version of her daughter. That is not entirely true. Because I am placid and she is proactive. She always makes things happen, and does not shy away from playing pranks. Maggie made me believe she was a hairdresser and offered me a free hairdo. After a few snips of the scissors, I regretted having accepted it. By then great damage had been done and I chivalrously allowed her to spoil the rest of my hair. But she got better with time, she often trims my hair and I am always satisfied with the results. When we were just into it, our relationship faced a test from unexpected quarters. I was singing and strumming my guitar when a girl from the audience got on stage and made a request, not for a song but a kiss. I shooed her away, but she stood her ground. From the corner of my eye, I watched Maggie all worked up. Two of Maggie’s friends were holding her by the arm to prevent her from getting into a brawl with my female fan. This incident showed the depth of Maggie’s love for me.

On our first date, I had drunk more than I should have and got sick to the point that I vomited on his coat. When we were leaving, he wore the coat as if nothing had happened. With great relief, I thought, “Ah, he has not noticed it.” Months later, he told me he had pretended not to have noticed to avoid embarrassing me. Earlier, we used to have disagreements over where to vacation. I hail from a quiet place in Northern Ireland located near the sea and he is a city-dweller, having lived most of his life in Glasgow. I enjoy vacations by the sea and find it easy to drag him to beaches. It is simple, I choose a city that is close to the sea.
