It’s kolu time

There are plenty of bommais to add to your collection

For navarathri Plenty to choose from

In less than a week, tables, stools, old biscuit tins and palagai will come together for a make-shift kolu padi. Or simply, five-tier or seven-tier readymade ‘stands’ will come out. And, a list of sundals for navarathri will be prepared. But, before all that will be discussions on which bommai to add to the kolu. Quite a discussion that will be, going by the sheer variety of dolls that have arrived this year.

Ramar paalam

The nearly four-foot Meenakshi Kalyanam stands imposingly at the Coimbatore North Sarvodaya Sangh outlet in Town Hall. Check out the interesting additions: pittukku mann sumandhadhu; kuselar set; gurupujai; govardhanagiri; aandal jananam; uriyadi set; thayir kadayum krishnan; guhan odai set; Brindavan set; Arunachalam set; etc. Pick out aalilaikrishnan, aruvadhaam kalyanam, Mamallapuram set, Tirupathi unjal and Lalithambigai set too. Keeping with the current controversial storm, a Ramar paalam set too has found a place in the exhibition!

If you want to add something unconventional this time around, there’s plenty to pick from. Make space for elephants, camels, birds, horses, bullocks and dolphins in ceramic, or Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekanand, Ambedkar, Shivaji and Thiruvalluvar. There are also a kuravan-kurathi set, park set, cricket set, bhakta Meera, and the famous three monkeys. They even have a ‘Mary with a little lamb’. The vegetable seller piece is all yours for Rs. 50 or a sparrow for Rs. 9. Many dolls have come from Kolhapur too, and with their chiselled features, they are irresistible. For details, call the outlet at 0422-2390950.

At Poompuhar in Town Hall, their famous collections are all there: Ganesha, Dhasavatharam, Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Durga, Aandal, Krishna, Gajalakshmi, Ardhanareeshwarar, Shivalingam, Ramar set, Ashtalakshmi and Annapoorneswari.

But, what is a kolu exhibition without new additions, and innovative ones at that? So, they bring you kaadhani vizha (ear-piercing) set; Rama with Jatayu (with his sturdy wings severed); Natyanjali with graceful dancers; Navanayagi set; Nila Kannan; Shiva (carrying baby Ganesha) and Parvathi (with baby Muruga); Panchamuka Anjaneyar; Thirupathi brahmotsavam; and Rishabavahanam.

What’s more, you also find sangeetha mummoorthigal; kutraalam set; Madurai Meenakshi in golden chariot and Thiruvannamalai set sharing shelf space. Standing at nearly four feet, the majestic Balaji Ganapathy in papier mache catches the eye. There are also the Azhwar and Raghavendra sets.

A discount of 10 per cent is offered on all dolls. For details, call 0422-2391055. The kolu exhibition is on at both the outlets till October 20.
