Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I want to buy a car and my budget is around Rs. 4 lakh. I have short-listed the Santro, Maruti Alto and Spark. Which should I choose and why? I will use the car within the city for around 30km per day.

Gowri Raghavendra

You could go for the Spark; it’s a fresh design, spacious, nimble in the city and fairly fuel-efficient. The car rides well in the city. The boot however, is slightly small and the interiors could be better.

I want to purchase a small car. I usually drive around 20km a day. I have short-listed the Santro Xing, Wagon R and the Swift. I want to add a CNG kit to the car. Is this advisable?

Neeraj Kumar

Out of the three cars short-listed, we would pick the Swift. As far as the CNG option goes. Look out for brands like Bedini, BRC, Lovato or Tartarini. These may be expensive but are worth the extra money. Also, get the conversion done at an RTO authorised installer only. This will ensure safety and reliability of the kit. As with gas conversions, you have to understand that your car will suffer a power loss. The power loss will be more apparent in the case of CNG when compared to LPG. So, please take a test drive of both CNG and LPG powered. Our advice, if you are a spirited driver and want to save, go for the LPG.

I want to know the average daily or monthly fuel consumption one should expect from a car fitted with the common-rail diesel engine and an ordinary diesel engine. I want a small car with a diesel engine. I drive aroun d 20km per day. What are my options?

Mallik

The fuel consumption of a car depends on many factors such as driving style, gearing and weight. Common-rail engines are definitely more efficient than ordinary diesels. If you want a small car with a diesel, then you have the Swift D, Indica Turbo and the Getz CRDi. Of these, the Indica will be the cheapest but it still suffers from niggling issues and inconsistent quality. The Getz CRDi is the most expensive here and has the most potent engine. We haven’t tested the Getz CRDi so we can’t comment on it. But as of now, the Swift DDIS makes for a good choice.
