Soul searching

Chopra’s latest book ‘Buddha’ has just hit the stands

The death of my father six years ago filled me with grief, a feeling of loss and suffering,” says Deepak Chopra, the popular new age management guru. While most people would have wallowed in self pity, it drove Chopra to “try and unravel the mysteries of life and the associated emotions like love and evil.”

For this, he delved into the ancient tale of Prince Siddhartha and his transformation into the Buddha. The story of Siddhartha and Chopra’s soul searching forms the basis of his latest book Buddha, published by Harper Collins. Chopra says, “The book reflects my interpretation of the philosophy of Buddha, which, I feel, was essentially a secular, spiritual line of thought.” Chopra, an alumnus of Delhi’s St. Columba’s School and the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, has been based in the U.S. for more than 35 years now. He says, “I feel at home wherever I go,” alluding to his enduring sense of peace and harmony, as he embarks on a tour of Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand among other places.

Asked about the present state of India, Chopra admits to having mixed feelings a mixed bag of emotions On his forayinto the field of media and entertainment, Chopra says: “That is handled by my children. I must say the company is doing well, and we are in talks with Nicholas Cage for our forthcoming venture, Sadhu which I have scripted.”
