Bring the questions on, please!

The posers on business at BIZWIZ ’07 made for an educating evening

Got it right? At BIZWIZ ‘07

When M. Rangarajan conducts a quiz, he does it in style. The quizmaster wanted a ‘birthday baby’ to answer the first question in the prelims.

The birthday boy

So, Varun from Government College of Technology (GCT) was asked: “Which company’s baseline is ‘Transforming tomorrow’?” Well, Varun said Arcelor Mittal, and took home a bag of goodies!

A whopping 210 teams took part in the prelims of BIZWIZ ’07, the national-level inter-college business quiz.

It was conducted by the Department of Corporate Secretaryship of PSG College of Arts and Science as part of the college’s diamond jubilee.

It took 30 questions to choose the eight teams for the finals.

Some questions were juicy: Which 1960 model car had the mnemonic ‘Every day something else leaks’? (Ford Edsel), some delicious – ‘Which book by Shombit Sengupta has the baseline ‘All stakeholders can enjoy a bite’? (Jalebi Management), and some, easy – Name the successful net venture by J. Murugavel. (Bharat Matrimony).

Two teams each from GCT and PSG Institute of Management, one each from Amrita School of Business, Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering (SVCE), Chennai, and Bangalore-based Christ College and University Visvesvarayya College of Engineering (UVCE) took the stage, all geared up for the battle.

Seven rounds

And, had seven rounds in front of them to fight it out for the top slot: Take 2; Three is Company; Q Mart; three rounds of Talking Straight; and the buzzer round.

From Round 1, the Chennai team made it clear that they meant business. Soon, they had jumped to 50 points, while a few of their competitors had not even opened their accounts. (Sadly, a couple of the teams never opened their accounts!).

As there were no negative markings in most rounds, one got creative, intelligent and ridiculously funny answers too. What is special about Stafild shoes? One said their soles don’t touch the ground, and another guessed it would cure breast cancer!

The auditorium was left in splits, and a laughing Rangarajan told the teams: “Thanks for the entertainment.”

However, the answer was, they are unification shoes in which the soles are made in South Korea and the uppers in North Korea.

Questions burst forth one after the other, in the form of audio and video pieces too. Teams had to identify Motilal Oswal; Rajdoot (called Bobby bike, after the film) among others.

A turn around

With just the buzzer round left, the Chennai boys, L. Ram Kumar and K. Kalaiselvam, were the clear winners. Or, so we thought, till the buzzers began to go off loud.

By the time the round ended, UVCE boys Rohit Nair and N. Varun Balan had cleverly snatched it from Chennai. Wonder if the buzzer heaved a sigh of relief when it all ended!

However, one solace for the Chennai team was that it was almost a photo finish. UVCE had bagged 150 points, along with Rs. 10,000 and gift hampers), and SVCE were just five points shy (richer, nonetheless, by Rs. 8,000 and gift hampers). Christ College that finished third took with them Rs. 5,000 and gift hampers.

For the audience

There were questions for audience the too. Such as these: What did Bradman take up after moving from cricket? Stock-broking; What id Google’s answer to i-phone? G-phone. And, it rained goodies on audience.

The Funniest Team Name was awarded to Quizmohan Singh Vs Pervez Quizaraf. A few team names that set you thinking were Next Question Please, Varutha Padaadha Valibar Sangam and Acid Girls.

Oh, by the way, one of the downright easy questions in the prelims was ‘In net lingo what does BFN stand for?’ For Gen Next that practically survives on the likes of LOL, BRB and ROTFL, that was a cakewalk. Anyways, Bye For Now!
