Picturesque Falls The waters of the Cauvery at Shivanasamudra

Karnataka is famous for its falls and the twin falls of Shivanasamudra attract tourists in plenty. After a season of good rains the falls are in fine form. To go to this place situated in Mandya district, about 120 km from Bangalore, one has to drive down Mysore road to reach the falls. After crossing Maddur turn left towards Malavalli. Malavalli is the site of the famous MTR or Malavalli Tiffin Room products and it was here that in 1799 Tipu Sultan’s forces lost to the British. After travelling a few kilometres beyond a board proclaiming the Shimsa Hydro Electric Project you reach the Shivanasamudra bus stand. Take the left turn to the falls. Trees surround the narrow road and the area abounds with ancient temples in a rural setting. The Madhyaranganatha swamy temple is dedicated to lord Vishnu. The beautiful Someswara temple dedicated to lord Shiva has an attractive Nandi statue. The Gaganachukki falls is another two kilometres from here past the dargah of the Sufi saint Syed Mardhani Gayeb. The cascading falls of Gaganachukki spread across a large area in some places falls from a height of 100 feet. The Barachukki Falls are about a kilometre from here. Falling from a height of 250 feet, they are a spectacular sight.

TIPS: Shivanasamudra is 120 km from Bangalore. Buses to Kollegal or Chamrajnagar stop here. The falls are about 4 km from here. Maddur, is also the nearest railhead.

Those wishing to stay the night can stay at the guest house run by the hydroelectric project. The Bheemeswari and Doddamakali fishing camps, about 30 km from the falls and run by the jungle lodge and resorts, are managed by Karnataka Tourism.
