Ramzan releases
There are two major releases for Ramzan, which is an important festival in North India — Priyadarshan’s comedy caper “Bhool Bhulaiyya” featuring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja, which is a remake of the Malayalam film “Manichitrathazhu” (remade as “Chandramukhi” in Tamil), and Yash Raj Films’ “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” which is adman-turned-director Pradeep Sarkar’s second film after the critically acclaimed “Parineeta”. The story is about a mother (Jaya Bachchan) and her two daughters (Rani Mukherjee and Konkona Sen) who grow up in small town Benaras. Circumstances force Rani to go to Mumbai, where she becomes a sophisticated call girl. She is introduced to a barrister (Abhishek Bachchan), and this changes her life. The grapevine has it that Sarkar has based his film on K.Balachander’s “Aval Oru Thodarkathai” (remade in Hindi as “Aaina” in 1977) and a Marathi film “Doghi” (1995). “Laaga…” is said to be a sentimental movie with lilting music by Shantanu Moitra.
