I have dull and rough hair. Suggest a conditioner I can make at home. — Tania

Give your hair a quick conditioning treatment before you shampoo it. Mix one teaspoon each of vinegar and honey with an egg. Beat these together well. Massage the mixture into the scalp. Then wrap your hair in a hot towel for 20 minutes, before washing it. Your hair will have more body and look shiny.

I have cellulite on my outer thighs, which protrudes. — Prabha

Cellulite is basically a lifestyle problem, caused by water, fat and other wastes that collect in pockets beneath the skin. You can massage the area daily with stroking and kneading movements. Brushing the skin also helps. The entire surface of the body should be brushed, using a rough cloth, starting from the feet, and going upwards; then from the lower to the upper arms; and then across the shoulders and back. The chest and abdominal area should be brushed gently. Eat fresh fruit, salads and sprouts daily and drink plenty of water. After consulting your doctor, take up some form of exercise daily.

I suffer from hair loss and dandruff. The flakes are oily and my scalp itches. — Ramya

Wash your hair daily, using very little shampoo and rinsing it well with water. Half an hour before shampooing, apply two tablespoons of vinegar, massaging it lightly into the scalp. Vinegar relieves itching too. Once a week, heat pure coconut oil or olive oil and apply it on the scalp at night, using cotton wool and rubbing it gently to dislodge the flakes. Leave it on overnight. Next morning, apply the juice of a lemon on your scalp, half an hour before shampooing it. Weekly henna treatments will also help.

I have hair on my upper lip. How do I remove it? Suggest home remedies to make me fair-complexioned. Rachna

Thread the upper lip hair at a beauty salon. To lighten your skin, mix honey, curd and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply it on the face, washing it off after 20 minutes. Cucumber and ripe papaya pulp applied on the face daily helps remove tan.

Aloe vera grows in my home. Can I use it on the skin? Rupa

Stabilised aloe vera gel and juice are used in cosmetic products. The gel is the leaf pulp or mucilage, obtained from the inner portion of the leaves. The juice is found just beneath the outer skin of the leaves. The gel and juice may be used directly on the skin. It moisturises the skin and softens it. While using it directly on the skin at home, it is important to observe strict hygiene. Wash the plant well before extracting the gel and the juice.

My skin is oily. When I apply astringent lotion, it burns. So, I’ve stopped using it. What do you advise? — Sandhya

Some astringent lotions are harsh on the skin. You can mix the lotion with rose water in equal quantities to dilute it and keep it in a bottle in the fridge. Apply it or wipe the skin with it, using cotton wool. Astringents help reduce oiliness. If the burning continues, stop using it. Cucumber juice also has an astringent effect. You can apply it on the skin and wash it off after 15 minutes.
