Heritage jewellery
Ganjam is hosting an exhibition of the art of Kundala Velai, the jewellery heritage of Southern India. The jeweller is showcasing rare jewellery exhibits from the Ganjam family archive, together with its Ganjam Heritage and Contemporary Classic collections.
The heritage pieces which have been collected by the family over the decades will be on show for exhibition purposes only. However, Ganjam’s contemporary heritage collection will be on display for both exhibition and sale purposes.
On display are such pieces as the padakam, a pendant, the manga malai, a necklace, the makarakanti, a ceremonial necklace, the vanki, a rigid armlet with a studded peacock motif forming the basis for the piece and the kantasaram, a choker necklace.
Then there’s the kada, an ornament worn on the wrist. The thalaikkachchu is a three-part headband framing the face at the hairline, while the kunjalam or the tassle is an ornament used to braid hair and secure it at the lower end.
The talai saman are part of the ornaments worn on the head and the jadai nagam is an ornament designed to decorate long plaited hair.
The exhibition is on display from 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. from October 13 to 15 at the Ganjam Mantapa, 84 Bull Temple Road, Basavangudi. Contact 98801 66115 for details.
