Colours of kolu

These traditional figurines are a feast for the eyes

HANDCRAFTED ELEGANCE Mythology in miniature

Awash with charm and colour the kolu exhibition at Vennirul Art Gallery showcases the near-art pieces crafted by the traditional toy makers from Etikopakka, Kondapalli, Kolkata and Tamilnadu. Captivating vignettes of rural life an d a forgotten ‘royal’ era, gods and goddesses in variegated postures and tiny perfectly crafted birds and animals, even stylised wood sculpture distinguish the collection on view.

The accent is on detailing and finish, making each creative piece part of the traditional kolu display.

The Kondapalli toy section is particularly arresting with its lyrical colours and beautifully hand crafted figures. Exquisitely finished and painted dasavataram sets, a part of all kolu displays, perfectly sculpted howdah elephants, palkis and bullock carts charm. Kondapalli toy makers have gone to town with their pretty village scenes complete with paper palm trees, women driving a bullock cart filled with gunny bags and a particularly fetching dancing Ganesha.

Etikopakka toys on display include menageries of birds such as parrots and storks, animal forms, mobiles, toy trains, cars as well as stylised sculptures of mother and child. The lacquer polish rivals glass in many of the toys.

The clay toys from Kolkata are bright and colourful while the marble dust Ganeshas from Tamilnadu display a sense of detailing and sculptural sophistication. The gilt marble Ganeshas are particularly eye catching.

The exhibition is on till October 19 at Vennirul Art Gallery, C.P. Arts Centre, Eldams Road, Alwarpet, Chennai-600 018.
