Ode to eternal love

The book release of O.N.V. Kurup’s ‘Snehichu Theerathavar’ turned out to be a reunion of friends

toast to friendship O.N.V. Kurup’s ‘Snehichu Theerathavar,’ is dedicated to the late writer N. Mohanan

Love is the star to every wandering bark, says William Shakespeare. It is one of those evergreen themes that no poet can leave untouched. When O.N.V. Kurup started penning down his long poem ‘Snehichu Theerathavar,’ his effort was to rec apture those moments and tales of human love.

When the piece got a book format, O.N.V. found it appropriate in all ways to dedicate the volume to writer N. Mohanan, son of the acclaimed litterateur Lalithambika Antharjanam.

Lyrical tribute

‘Snehichu Theerathavar,’ divided into eight sections, is a lyrical tribute to universal love. “What I have done is to bring out a symphony of ‘objective correlatives’ that belong to different times and locales. The universal glory of love is the theme evoked. You can also see love in its rainbow splendour: fulfilment, failure, bereavement, thorny paths, shattered dreams, reunion and conjugal felicity,” says O.N.V.

The book release, held on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of N. Mohanan, made it possible for a nostalgic get-together – O.N.V.Kurup, Sugathakumari and Saritha Varma, who is N.Mohanan’s daughter.

“When I thought of a person to whom I can dedicate this book, I found none better than N.Mohanan. He was my intimate friend. He paid glorious tribute to love. The very emotion had an integral place in his life. Unfortunately, we lost him too early,” says O.N.V.

The friends’ circle of N.Mohanan also included poets Sugathakumari and Puthusseri Ramachandran, and artist A.Ramachandran.

Puthusseri still treasures the memory of that day when N.Mohanan joined the college: “It was Lalithambika Antharjanam who brought us together. She had entrusted O.N.V. and myself with the duty of looking after her son whose passions often too him to extracurricular zones.”

Saritha Varma, N.Mohanan’s daughter, believes O.N.V.’s dedication of the book is the emotional enactment of a special bond.

“It is not the first time that O.N.V. is dedicating a poem to my father, his soul mate. ‘Snehichu Theerathavar’ is the new addition in this regard. O.N.V. used to read out his new works to my father who had a unique skill to memorise the lines once heard. O.N.V., through the present volume, has created a Taj Mahal in verse,” says Saritha.

The cute hardbound edition, published by DC Books, sports interleaves with beautiful sketches by Artist Namboothiry.
