Matte finish for the skin is back in vogue



STRIKING TONES Choose what works for you

A heads up to all trend watchers out there—glossy is out, matte is back. Makeup trends in the West have come a full circle on catwalks this Fall/Winter, with a modified version of the 90s matte finish for the skin coming back in vogue. And that , according to trainer Lippi Lal of the House of Bacarrose, is really good news for Indians.

“Matte never really went out of fashion at all in India,” says Lippi, laughing. “We tend to stick with certain looks long after they’re gone in the West, but that’s a good thing in this case.”

This season’s look isn’t quite the sober opaque matte of the 90s (which came in the wake of the over-the-top styles of the 80s). “It’s a lighter, more translucent matte finish, accompanied with thick eye-liner on the upper lid a la Audrey Hepburn, soft red lipsticks and pale blush,” says Lippi, who has worked with leading brands such as Nina Ricci, Azarro, Cartier and Max Factor over the last 14 years.

Two-tones for the eye

The other look this fall is striking, metallic two-tones for the eyes—such as purple and gold or mauve and khaki—with softer, glossier lips.

Two-tones are also in for nails—French manicures with a white tip and orange or red insides are all the rage, according to Lippi: “The Goth-inspired look is making its way into the catwalk.”

It’s not just makeup that’s come full circle—oriental, woody scents reminiscent of Dior’s Poison are coming back in style after the fresh, ‘back to nature’ fragrances of the 90s. “But they’re refined with a hint of freshness that makes them less heavy,” she says. A new trend in perfumes is the use of ‘synthetic fragrances’—the metallic note in men’s perfumes, for example— that allow for innovative combinations.

But the cardinal rule of make-up remains the same: the individual comes first and then fashion. “If who you are a bit of tomboy, I wouldn’t do you up to look like Paris Hilton,” says Lippi. “Choose fashions that work for you.”
